Petrykivsky painting or “petrykivka” is traditional Ukrainian decorative painting, which originates from Dnipropetrovsk oblast of Ukraine, Petrykivka village.
Actually, you can use any type of paints, but it is better to use gouache to paint on the paper and to choose a few basic colours - yellow, red, green and blue – and create new shades of colours by yourself while painting.
In this tutorial we will paint only with handmade tools, such as "koshachka" brush, "rohozynka" and our fingers. Although for Petrykivka painting any brushes made of natural fur can be used.
Now we will draw "maliovka" - a picture with Petrykivka, painted on a small piece of paper (paper of A5 format). To start with, you will need to make a sketch of a guilder rose and flowers with a thin pencil.
Next, let’s thin down the paints by blending gouache with PVA glue until smooth in the ratio of 60 to 40 respectively. The paint should be smooth, without any lumps, of the consistence of home cream. It is necessary to ensure good covering properties of paint.
The place for the guelder rose needs to be painted in yellow with a brush.
Let’s start with a guelder rose – dip a finger into the paint and make a single impress, so that a fingerprint would be seen. Only such guelder rose is considered to be real.
Serial impresses of berries form guelder rose bunches. Yellow layer from the bottom gives a special shade to berries.
Next step is flowers. Load "koshachka" brush with a paint and lay down a single stroke in the circle of a sketched flower.
This basic element in Petrykivka which is called “zerniatko” (a seed) is painted by a single stroke with "koshachka" brush. Such strokes form flowers, leaves and decorative elements.
Serial strokes of "zerniatko" element made with "koshachka" brush create the simplest flower.
While special strokes are made with a special tool "rohozynka" – a wooden stick cut at 45 degree angle.
Dip "rohozynka" into the paint and "scrabble" the stroke once in order to create a petal of future flower. A series of such elements will create a flower.
Paint simple leaves by using "koshachka" brush and then connect all flowers with thin, bent stalks in the composition.
A leaf of grass is an important basic element which is painted with a "koshachka" brush by broaching strokes with a varied force applied. With this element you can paint both independent decorative grass and separate leaves.
Final stage – fill with the detail different decorative grasses and leaves, make the flowers complete with different berries.
The final result is a traditional Petrykivka "maliovka"
The basic elements can be used to create leaves of any configuration and complexity ranging from the simplest with a few elements to the multi-level compositions.
With the help of two basic elements "zerniatko" and grass, various flowers can be created.
This three "maliovkas" were painted using "koshachka" brush only.
This flower was paint by "zerniatko" element
All grasses – decorative elements and leaves- are painted with element "travychka" (grass)
All green, decorative branches and decoration of flowers were painted by combining two basic elements.
